The sequel could also feature a villain called Electro and Peter Parker's best friend Harry Osborn

The Descendants star Shailene Woodley could appear as Mary Jane Watson in The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

According to Variety, the actress is in “early talks” to revive the role, which was played by Kirsten Dunst in three Spider-Man movies between 2002 and 2007. In the original Marvel comic books, the red-headed Mary Jane is Peter Parker’s childhood crush and eventual wife.

The film’s makers, Columbia Pictures, are also looking for an actor to play Harry Osborn, Parker’s best friend and eventual enemy. Osborn was played by James Franco in the earlier Spider-Man movies. Meanwhile, a character called Electro, who has only ever appeared in Spider-Man comic books, is apparently in the running to become the sequel’s villain.

Earlier this month (October 2012), Columbia confirmed that Andrew Garfield will reprise his role as Peter Parker in the sequel. Director Marc Webb will also return, while Emma Stone is in talks to make a second appearance as Gwen Stacy.

The sequel is being scripted by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, the in-demand writing duo behind 2009’s Star Trek, alongside Jeff Pinkner, who has written for Lost and Fringe. A previous draft was provided by James Vanderbilt, one of the screenwriters on The Amazing Spider-Man.

The Spider-Man sequel, which has yet to be given an official title, is due to go into production in early 2013. Columbia Pictures has scheduled its release for May 2, 2014.

Meanwhile, Shailene Woodley has also been linked to the Fifty Shades Of Grey film. The 20-year-old actress, who received a Golden Globe nomination for her performance opposite George Clooney in The Descendants, recently finished shooting a high school movie called The Spectacular Now, due in 2013.
