Adele, Anne Hathaway, Jennifer Lawrence also triumph at the Oscars in Hollywood
The 85th annual Academy Awards took place last night (February 24) in Hollywood.
Argo was named Best Picture and Ang Lee won the Best Director award for Life Of Pi.
The ceremony was hosted by Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
Jennifer Lawrence won Best Actress for her role in Silver Linings Playbook, but fell up the stairs when she went to collect her award. “You guys are just standing up because you feel bad that I fell,” she said about the standing ovation she received.
Daniel Day Lewis won the award for Best Actor for Lincoln. “I had actually been committed to play Margaret Thatcher and Meryl [Streep] was Steven Spielberg’s first choice for Lincoln,” he joked during his acceptance speech after being given his award by Streep.
Adele collected the award for Best Original Song for ‘Skyfall’ with her co-writer Paul Epworth. “Thank you so much, this is amazing,” she said. Epworth added: “I’d like to thank Adele for being the best person I’ve ever worked with.”
Anne Hathaway was named Best Supporting Actress for Les Miserables and Christoph Waltz was named Best Supporting Actor for Django Unchained, for which Quentin Tarantino won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. “This will be the writers year, man… Peace out,” said Tarantino on collecting his gong.
Searching For Sugar Man, the acclaimed film about ‘lost’ protest singer Rodriguez was named Best Documentary. “Thanks to one of the greatest singers ever, Rodriguez,” said director Malik Bendjelloul in his acceptance speech. Producer Simon Chinn explained that the star of the movie wasn’t at the ceremony “because he didn’t want to take any of the credit.”
Mark Wahlberg presented the award for Best Sound Mixing to Les Miserables with his animated co-star from Ted, voiced by host Seth MacFarlane. The award for Best Sound Editing was tied between Zero Dark Thirty and Skyfall. “No BS,” said Wahlberg when he revealed that the award was to be given to two films.
During the show, Adele performed her award winning song ‘Skyfall’ from the Bond movie of the same name. At the Grammy Awards earlier this month, the London singer said she was nervous about singing at the ceremony. “I’m shitting myself!” she commented.
The ceremony featured a live performance of songs from old and new Oscar-winning films. Catherine Zeta Jones sang a number from Chicago, Jennifer Hudson from Dreamgirls, and the cast of Best Picture nominated Les Miserables – including Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Sacha Baron Cohen and Eddie Redmayne – also sang.
Barbra Streisand performed the Oscar winning song ‘The Way We Were’ from the 1973 film of the same name at the end of the In Memoriam section, which included a tribute to MCA of the Beastie Boys. Marvin Hamlisch, who wrote the music for the song, passed away last year.
