'Hot Tub Time Machine' director is in talks to helm a sequel to the offbeat festive comedy
Bad Santa 2 has reportedly landed a writer-director.
According to Deadline, Steve Pink is in talks to “rewrite and direct” a sequel to the offbeat festive comedy. The original, released in time for Christmas 2003, starred Billy Bob Thornton as Willie T. Stokes, a hard-drinking, chain-smoking, foul-mouthed sexaholic who becomes a mall Santa.
Pink, 46, is best known for his big screen collaborations with John Cusack. He directed the actor in 2010’s Hot Tub Time Machine and co-wrote the screenplays for his earlier movies Grosse Pointe Blank and High Fidelity. Pink also served as a producer on Tom Cruise’s 2010 action comedy Knight And Day.
According to IMDb, Bad Santa 2 already has a draft script by novice writers Johnny Rosenthal and John Phillips. It is not known whether Pink will rewrite this or start from scratch. The original Bad Santa was directed by Terry Zwigoff from a script by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, who have since worked together on I Love You, Phillip Morris and Crazy, Stupid, Love.
Thornton received a Golden Globe nomination for his memorable portrayal of the unlikely mall Santa in the 2003 original. He is expected to reprise his role in the sequel, which is scheduled to go into production later this year for a Christmas 2013 release.
