‘Batman v Superman’ takings fall 68 per cent but film remains top of US box office

Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice has remained at the top spot of the US box office despite suffering an estimated 68 per cent fall from its opening week.

Zack Snyder’s superhero mash-up movie, which had the fourth biggest opening weekend in global box office history upon release, brought in $52.4 million (£36.8m) at US cinemas over its second weekend, according to comScore estimates.

Despite disappointing reviews, Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice earned $166 million (£116m) during its opening weekend, taking in $424.1 million (£299.2m) worldwide – a total only beaten in the past by Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Jurassic World and Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2.

Other big box office drop offs in recent history include Christopher Nolan’s 2012 film The Dark Knight Rises, which suffered a 61.4 per cent second weekend fall, and 2015’s Fantastic Four which dipped by 68.2 per cent.

In the UK, the film opened with £17.96m over the four-day Easter weekend. Its second weekend UK takings will be announced later this week.

Meanwhile, it was recently reported that Ben Affleck has written a script for a stand-alone Batman film. Affleck made his debut as the iconic superhero in Dawn of Justice.
