The high-profile DreamWorks movie is based on the popular series of racing car video games

Aaron Paul from Breaking Bad has been cast as the lead in DreamWorks’ Need For Speed movie.

Need For Speed will be based on the popular series of racing car video games published by Electronic Arts. The first game was released in 1994 and the series has now sold over 100million copies worldwide.

The film’s script will be “inspired by” the racing games, but not adapted from any one title. It is being written by John Gatins, whose previous screenwriting credits include Real Steel and Coach Carter, with his brother George Gatins.

Scott Waugh, who helmed this year’s Navy SEALs drama Act Of Valor, is on board as director. Filming is scheduled to begin in early 2013 and DreamWorks has set a release date of February 7, 2014.

Aaron Paul is best known for playing Jesse Pinkman on US drugs drama Breaking Bad, a role which has won him two Emmys. The show’s final episodes will air next year (2013) and Paul is now focusing on film projects.

His new movie Smashed, a comedy-drama co-starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead, opens in the US later this month (October 2012). You can watch the film’s trailer below.
