She'll play tyrannical orphanage owner Miss Hannigan in the remake produced by Jay-Z
Cameron Diaz has joined Jamie Foxx in Jay-Z‘s Annie remake.
She’ll play tyrannical orphanage owner Miss Hannigan, Deadline reports, after Sandra Bullock passed on the part last week (June 20). Foxx is on board to co-star as little orphan Annie’s saviour Daddy Warbucks.
Jay-Z is a producer on the new Annie movie alongside Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, whose daughter Willow was originally in line for the title role. However, Oscar-nominated child actress Quvenzhané Wallis (Beasts Of The Southern Wild) is now set to play Annie after Willow, 13 in October, outgrew the part.
Jay-Z, who sampled a song from the classic Broadway musical for his 1998 hit ‘Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem)’, is also rumoured to be writing new songs for the remake. Will Gluck (Easy A, Friends With Benefits) is on board as director and Sony has scheduled a release date of Christmas Day 2014.
The original stage production of Annie opened on Broadway in 1977 and ran for six years. The popular 1982 film version was directed by John Huston and starred 11-year-old Aileen Quinn in the title role alongside Carol Burnett as Miss Hannigan and Albert Finney as Daddy Warbucks.
