Cate Blanchett has signed up to direct her first feature film.
The Oscar-winning actress will helm an adaptation of Herman Koch‘s novel The Dinner, Deadline reports. At present, it is unknown whether Blanchett will also appear in the film.
The acclaimed novel, which was published in 2009, is a psychological thriller which centres on a restaurant meeting between two sets of parents whose sons have very probably committed a heinous crime. The story is about “what you would do to defend your children,” Dutch author Koch has explained in interviews.
Meanwhile, Blanchett is currently considered frontrunner for next year’s Best Actress Oscar for her performance in Woody Allen’s latest film Blue Jasmine. It opens in UK cinemas next Friday (September 27) – watch the trailer below.
Although The Dinner will mark Blanchett’s debut as a film director, the actress has directed several plays during her five-year tenure as co-artistic director of the Sydney Theatre Company, which draws to an end this year (2013).
