Disney's new live action version of the classic folk tale has been in the works since 2010

Cate Blanchett is set to play the evil stepmother in a new Cinderella movie.

According to Deadline, the actress is “in deep talks” for the baddie role in Disney’s new live action version of the classic folk tale. She would be the first cast member to sign up.

Disney’s new Cinderella movie has been in the works since 2010. It has a script by Chris Weitz, whose previous screenwriting credits include The Golden Compass and About A Boy. Mark Romanek, who previously helmed Never Let Me Go, is on board as director.

Meanwhile, Blanchett will soon be seen as Galadriel in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Peter Jackson’s first The Hobbit film opens in cinemas on December 14 and you can watch the trailer below.

Last month (October 2012), Blanchett signed up for The Monuments Men, George Clooney‘s next project as a director. The period drama boasts a bumper ensemble cast that also includes Daniel Craig, Bill Murray, John Goodman and Clooney himself.
