Charlie Hunnam backs out of ‘Fifty Shades Of Grey’ movie

Universal blames Hunnams 'immersive TV schedule'

Charlie Hunnam has quit the forthcoming Fifty Shades Of Grey movie.

The Sons of Anarchy actor has reportedly backed out of playing Christian Grey in the adaptation of EL James’ racy novel due to his “immersive TV schedule”.

A statement from Universal read: “The filmmakers of Fifty Shades Of Grey and Charlie Hunnam have agreed to find another male lead, given Hunnam’s immersive TV schedule which is not allowing him time to adequately prepare for the role of Christian Grey.”

EL James, author of the trilogy of erotic novels tracing the sexual relationship between college graduate Anastasia Steele and businessman Christian Grey, announced the film’s male and female leads last month (September 2). Hunnam was expected to play Grey opposite Dakota Johnson as Steele.

Writing about Hunnam’s exit on Twitter, James simply wrote: “I wish Charlie all the best. X” It is currently unclear who will sign up as his replacement to play Christian Grey.

Nowhere Boy‘s Sam Taylor-Wood is on board as director and Fifty Shades Of Grey is expected to start shooting this November in Vancouver. The film will open in US cinemas on August 1, 2014, though the UK release date has yet to be confirmed.
