Chewbacca actor Peter Mayhew released from hospital following bout of pneumonia

Mayhew will reprise his popular role in JJ Abrams' 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens'

Actor Peter Mayhew, who plays Chewbacca in the Star Wars franchise, has been released from hospital following a bout of pneumonia.

The 70-year-old actor shared the good news with his fans on Twitter earlier today (January 22).

Mayhew’s wife Angie had confirmed on Monday (January 19) that her husband had been hospitalised, reassuring fans that he was on track to “make a full recovery, and hope(s) to be discharged within a few days”.

British-born Mayhew, who now lives in Texas, was cast as Chewbacca in George Lucas’s original 1977 Star Wars film owing to his considerable height: at his peak, he stood at 7ft 3in tall. Mayhew reprised his popular role for 1980’s The Empire Strikes Back, 1983’s Return of the Jedi and 2005’s Revenge of The Sith.

He is also returning as Chewbacca in JJ Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which is set for release on December 18 this year.
