The film was released without warning after the Super Bowl this past weekend and it has since received a 19% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Though Cloververse fans have been scouring the movie for links to the other two films – Cloverfield and 10 Cloverfield Lane, respectively – JJ Abrams has revealed that there are some references the fans have missed.
Speaking to NME, producer Abrams teased about easter eggs: “There are two that I can think of that I don’t think have been found that are cool and, actually, weirdly something that we’re doing with Netflix”.
He did add, however: “By the time I’m done with this sentence, people will have found it, because it’s incredible how quickly people find the things that you think will take days or weeks or months”.
The surprise movie – which Netflix paid more than $50 million to save after it was deemed ‘unsalvageable’ – is reported to have a follow-up later this year titled Overlord.
NME spoke to director Julius Onah and producer JJ Abrams to address how the series progresses from now: “the director, Julius Avery, has done an amazing job on [Overlord]. But the specifics? We should wait and see. But that’s a crazy movie.”
The Cloverfield Paradox is available on Netflix now.
