Reeves' action thriller sequel starts shooting this week
Common has been cast as the main villain opposite Keanu Reeves in John Wick 2.
Ian McShane is also reprising his role from the hit action thriller, which starred Reeves as a former hitman who comes out of retirement after an obnoxious rich kid (Alfie Allen) kills the beagle puppy left to him by his late wife.
After being released in the US last October and in the UK this April, John Wick grossed over $78 million (£51 million) at the global box office – an impressive return from its $20 million (£13 million) budget. Read the NME review here.
The original film was co-directed by Chad Stahelski and David Leitch, but Stahelski will direct the sequel by himself, The Hollywood Reporter says. Derek Kolstad, who wrote the original’s screenplay, has also written the follow-up and shooting is due to start this week.
Specific plot details are being kept under wraps, but Common is said to be playing the head of security for a female crime lord who presumably comes into conflict with Reeves’ character. The rapper/actor has previously appeared in films including Selma, Date Night and Now You See Me, and will be seen alongside Will Smith and Jared Leto in next year’s Suicide Squad movie.
