Critics hail ‘Skyfall’ as ‘best James Bond film yet’

007's return to the big-screen garners rave reviews

The new James Bond film Skyfall has received lavish praise in the first wave of reviews from film critics.

IGN claimed that the flick, which was directed by Sam Mendes, was the “best Bond film yet” and described it as a “master of its own game”, while UK movie magazine Total Film gave it top marks of five stars, labeling it “a flawlessly assembled thrill ride with a cast to die for and a nakedly emotional undertow.”

Empire magazine, meanwhile, awarded it four stars but was no less lavish in its praise. “Skyfall is pretty much all you could want from a 21st century Bond,” they said. “Cool but not camp, respectful of tradition but up to the moment, serious in its thrills and relatively complex in its characters but with the sense of fun that hasn’t always been evident lately.”

Elsewhere, NME‘s sister magazine Uncut hailed the performance by Javier Bardem for a “deliciously larger-than-life villain of the kind not seen since Roger Moore’s heyday on the series”, while US industry bible The Hollywood Reporter claimed that Craig steals the show in his strongest outing as 007 yet, writing: “He owns Bond now, and the role is undoubtedly his for as long as he might want it.”

Skyfall, the 23rd Bond movie, arrives in cinemas on October 26. Alongside Craig in his third outing as 007, the film boasts a bumper cast including Ben Whishaw as Q, Judi Dench, Javier Bardem, Albert Finney, Naomie Harris and Ralph Fiennes. You can watch the trailer below.
