Daisy Ridley is against ‘Star Wars’ romance for Rey

Star Wars’ Daisy Ridley has revealed that she isn’t keen on the idea of her character being involved in a romantic relationship.

With Rey and Oscar Isaac’s character Poe meeting at the end of The Last Jedi, some fans were left hoping that their relationship will develop as the franchise continues. Daisy Ridley, however, doesn’t believe that the films need to include this aspect.

“I haven’t spoken to JJ [Abrams] but… I did a film this year that is not romantic,” Ridley told MTime. “I think it’s wonderful to have relationships that are not romantic.”

She continued: “I don’t think in films you always need a romantic relationship and I think friend relationships can be romantic in their gestures and their intimacy and all of that.

“So I think – hopefully – if Rey and Poe get to have some scenes together and stuff, that there will be intimacy. But I think it doesn’t – for me – it doesn’t have to be romantic love.”

With the latest Star Wars movies being praised for featuring strong female characters, it’s questionable as to whether a romantic sub-plot would be the right way to go.

Elsewhere, Black Mirror‘s Cristin Milioti spoke of how rare it is for women to be offered roles that don’t focus on “who she’s dating or whose love interest she is.”

In other Star Wars news, the original name of The Last Jedi‘s BB-8 has been revealed.

Neal Scanlan – creature designer for the two latest Star Wars main franchise films The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi – recently said  that BB-8 was originally called “Snow Girl or Globe”.
