‘Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes’ is the UK’s top summer box office performer with £31.98m

'The Inbetweeners 2' rakes in £31m to claim second spot

Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes has won the battle for top title of the summer at the UK box office with receipts totalling £31.98m.

The Inbetweeners 2 (pictured) took the boys down under and claimed second place with £31m. The sequel falls some way short of the £45m racked up by The Inbetweeners Movie in 2011. However, the film’s performance is still impressive for a low budget TV spin-off and is still on general release putting bums on seats.

Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes is well ahead of predecessor Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes which managed a total of £20.77m in 2011.

Rounding out the top five summer films at the UK box office were X-Men: Days Of Future Past (£27.13m), top American box office performer Guardians Of The Galaxy (£24.50m) and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (£24.12m).

Dawn picks up the story a decade after the events of Rise which saw James Franco’s scientist raise ape Caesar before the simian flu began wiping out mankind.

In Dawn Caesar, played via motion capture by Andy Serkis, leads his simian horde to the safety of the San Francisco hills where tensions rise when a group of humans make contact desperate for electrical power to aid their survival.

Director Matt Reeves will return for the threequel. Planet of the Apes 3 is scheduled for release in July 2016.
