Emma Watson speaks out about experiencing “full spectrum” of sexual harassment in Hollywood

'Harry Potter' star says her experiences are "not unique"

Emma Watson has said that she has experienced the “full spectrum” of sexual harassment in Hollywood, but believes that her experiences are “not unique”.

Former Harry Potter star Watson was speaking to Variety on the red carpet at the Golden Globes on Sunday (January 7), where female stars united to take a stand against abuse and harassment against women in the movie industry and beyond.

“It’s amazing because I have experienced the full spectrum [of harassment],” Watson said before the ceremony, “but I think that for me, what is amazing is that my experiences are not unique, the experiences of my friends are not unique, the experiences of my colleagues are not unique. This issue is so systemic, structural.”

“The statistics around – even in the United Kingdom – women between the ages of 18 to 24, huge, huge, huge numbers say that they have experienced sexual harassment in the workplace.”

Watson continued to add: “You realise, if you speak to most women, they have an experience, they have a story. We’re just uncovering. We’re just scratching the surface of this, which is what’s really crazy.”

Last year, Emma Watson hit back at critics following a backlash over a ‘topless’ photo shoot.

“Feminism is about giving women choice. Feminism is not a stick with which to beat other women with, it’s about freedom, it’s about liberation, it’s about equality,” she told Channel 4 News. “I really don’t know what my tits have to do with it, it’s quite confusing. I’m always just quietly stunned.”

Watson added: “The shot itself I was honestly slightly taken aback by, because we’d been doing so many crazy things on that shoot,” Watson continued. “But it felt incredibly artistic and I’ve been so creatively involved and engaged with [Vanity Fair photographer Tim Walker], and I’m so thrilled with how interesting and beautiful the photographs were.”

“It always reveals to me how many misconceptions and what a misunderstanding there is of what feminism is,” she said.
