Outkast star leads John Ridley's biopic 'Jimi: All Is By My Side'
An exclusive clip from Jimi: All Is By My Side featuring Andre 3000 as Jimi Hendrix has been released.
The Outkast star plays the rock legend in a biopic written and directed by 12 Years A Slave screen writer John Ridley.
In the clip, Jimi and his then girlfriend Kathy Etchingham (Hayley Atwell) are confronted by police who take exception to his military jacket.
Covering a defining year in the life of Hendrix, when the unknown backup guitarist went from playing New York’s Cheetah Club to making his mark in London’s music scene, the film charts his journey towards a breakthrough Monterey Pop Festival appearance.
The producers promise an intimate portrait of a sensitive young musician on the verge of becoming a rock god following Hendrix as he lands in London in 1966 – a city fuelled by guitar music, drugs and the swell of national pride triggered by England’s World Cup win.
The film will not feature any songs recorded or composed by Hendrix himself, as the late guitarist’s estate declined permission. Instead, the film will see Andre 3000 perform songs by The Beatles and blues legend Muddy Waters that Hendrix himself covered in the ’60s.
John Ridley told Rolling Stone he was excited to work with Andre Benjamin (aka Andre 3000). “I was blessed, because I got a musician who can act and an actor who could play. Andre is just a unique talent, and part of that talent that you see also came from a lot of hard work,” he explained. “The first time I met him, he had a curiosity about the world that was equal to what I believe Jimi’s curiosity about music and the world was at that time in his life. He’s got the physicality, he’s got the emotional curiosity, he’s got the charisma – so to a degree, he’s already there.”
Also starring Imogen Poots, Jimi: All Is By My Side is released in cinemas October 24.Video
