The short film has been nominated for Best Animated Short Film at the Oscars
Film fans have taken to Twitter to rave about Disney’s new animated short film Paperman. Scroll down to watch it in full.
The animated short was originally shown in theatres before Wreck-It Ralph at the end of last year – but in the wake of it being nominated for Best Animated Short Film at this year’s Oscars, Disney have released it online in full.
Director John Kahrs told Cartoon Brew that he had the idea for Paperman after working with classic Disney animator Glen Keane on Tangled. “I thought, why do we have to leave these drawings behind? Why can’t we bring them back up to the front of the image again? Is there a way that [CGI] can kinda carry along the hand drawn line in a way that we haven’t done before?”
Kahrs’ blend of 2D and CGI animation has been a hit with Twitter users and critics alike. The Telegraph’s Tim Robey has said: “Paperman is the best thing Disney has done in years”, while The Huffington Post described it as “a funny, charming thing of beauty”. The silent short tells the story of a young man and woman who meet by chance at a train station but go their separate ways before they have the chance to get to know each other. It’s not until later that the Paperman realises that the woman works in the building across from him and tries to attract her attention using paper aeroplanes.
