The first photo from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 has arrived.

Director James Gunn took to Twitter to share the image and confirm that shooting for the sequel has officially started.

In the image, characters Star-Lord, Drax the Destroyer, Gamora, Rocket and Groot can all be seen, even if Groot is a lot smaller than we remember.

This week, Gunn also confirmed speculation that Kurt Russell has joined the project, writing: “And yes Kurt Russell has joined the #GotGVol2 cast, as have @PomKlementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, and @SullyActsUp. They are all amazing.”

It’s been heavily rumoured that Russell will play the father of Star-Lord, the film’s protagonist, played by Chris Pratt.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is produced by Marvel Studios’ president, Kevin Feige, with Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Jonathan Schwartz, Nik Korda and Stan Lee serving as executive producers.

According to Marvel, the original Guardians of the Galaxy was a hit with critics and audiences alike, earning over $770 million at the worldwide box-office, and holds the record as the most successful debut film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In addition, the film’s soundtrack went platinum and was nominated for a Grammy.
