Audiences can see the preview before select IMAX screenings of ‘The Hobbit’
From today (December 14) the first nine-minutes of Star Trek Into Darkness will be previewing ahead of select IMAX screenings of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.
The NME attended a screening of the preview this morning along with Benedict Cumberbatch, Alice Eve and producer Bryan Burk.
The opening nine minutes of Star Trek Into Darkness is set in London as a young couple visit their dying daughter in hospital. Benedict Cumberbatch’s character appears on screen and tells them that he can save her.
The film then switches to Kirk and his crew as they battle to save an M-Class planet from destruction at the hands of a volcano. As Kirk and Bones run from the angry indigenous population Spock descends into the heart of the volcano with the help of Solo and Uhura, to try and stop the eruption. But Spock becomes trapped and as the nine-minutes come to a close Kirk is left desperately trying to think of a way to save him.
The plot of Star Trek Into Darkness is being kept tightly under wraps but it’s recently been revealed that Cumberbatch’s character is called John Harrison, despite rumours that the film’s villain would be Khan or Gary Mitchell. There’s also speculation that Spock will be killed off in this film, but regardless of the danger his character faces in the nine-minute preview Zachary Quinto maintains that he will not be leaving the franchise yet. Alice Eve’s character has also been named as Dr. Carol Marcus who appears in the 1982 film Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan and is Kirk’s long lost love and mother of his only son.
At the preview screening this morning Eve and Cumberbatch talked about how much they enjoyed filming Star Trek Into Darkness with Cumberbatch calling director JJ Abrams “extraordinary” and Bryan Burk revealing they’re already talking ideas for the next film.
