‘Friday The 13th’ actress Betsy Palmer dies, aged 88

Palmer played knife-wielding cook Pamela Voorhees in the 1980 slasher classic

Veteran actress Betsy Palmer has passed away at the age of 88.

Palmer was best known for playing knife-wielding cook Pamela Voorhees in cult 1980 classic slasher flick Friday The 13th and its 1981 sequel, Friday The 13th Part 2. She was also known for her regular appearances on US panel show I’ve Got A Secret during the late 1950s and 1960s.

Palmer had worked prolifically on stage and screen during her early career and often admitted that she only accepted her role in Friday The 13th, whose script she initially dismissed as a “piece of junk”, so she could buy a new car. However, she later embraced the fame the cult horror film brought her and gave numerous interviews in support of its 2009 release on DVD and Blu-ray.

She died of natural causes on Friday (May 29) at a hospice in Connecticut, her manager told The Associated Press, and is survived by her daughter.

Palmer’s other screen credits included a recurring role in US soap opera Knot’s Landing and guest appearances on Columbo, Murder, She Wrote and Just Shoot Me!. More recently, she provided the voice of the title character in 2007’s Bell Witch: The Movie.
