The biopic stars Luther‘s Idris Elba as Nelson Mandela, the iconic anti-apartheid leader and politician. It follows Mandela’s journey from his childhood in a rural village through to his imprisonment for sabotage and conspiracy to overthrow the government, subsequent release and his inauguration in 1994 as the first democratically-elected president of South Africa – which was watched by over a billion TV viewers worldwide.
Elba is already being tipped for an Oscar nomination for his performance in the film, which is based on Mandela’s own autobiographical book, Long Walk To Freedom, published in 1994. William Nicholson, Oscar-nominated for Gladiator and Les Misérables, wrote the script.
Justin Chadwick (The Other Boleyn Girl) directed and Skyfall‘s Naomie Harris co-stars as Mandela’s former wife Winnie. The film opens in US cinemas on November 29 before getting a UK release on January 3, 2014.
Mandela celebrated his 95th birthday yesterday (July 18) in hospital, having been admitted last month (June) with a lung infection. He remains critically ill but his office said yesterday that “his health is steadily improving”.
