Jared Leto sent dead hog, live rat and bullets to ‘Suicide Squad’ castmates

30 Seconds To Mars man showered his co-stars with unusual gifts to prove his commitment to the film

Jared Leto showered his Suicide Squad castmates with unusual gifts when he missed the start of shooting, one of his co-stars has revealed.

Director David Ayer started shooting the super-villain movie in Toronto in April, but Leto wasn’t present when he shared the first picture of the cast in costume in early May. However, the 30 Seconds To Mars frontman went to great lengths to prove his commitment to his key role as The Joker in the film.

“He sent [co-star Margot Robbie] a nice love letter with a black box with a rat in it – a live rat,” Adam Beach, who appears as Slipnot in the film, told E!. “It was beautiful. Then he sent bullets to Will [Smith] with a letter.”

Continuing, Beach revealed that to underline his dedication to the project, Leto also sent the entire cast a video message accompanied by a “dead hog”. Recalling the content of Leto’s message, Beach explained: “Basically, what he said was, ‘Guys, I can’t be there but I want you to know I’m doing my work as hard as you guys’. The video he showed is in character. It blew our minds away. Then we realised that day, this is real.”

Leto has since joined the rest of the Suicide Squad on set in Toronto and Beach said he has been impressed by the actor’s performance as The Joker. “He encompasses this beautiful man and he shows it in, ‘Hello, how are you?,’ but in an instant, he goes to psychotic behaviour where you’re in fear,” Beach said. “But you love him because he has both of those genuine sides.”

Alongside Leto as The Joker, Will Smith will star in Suicide Squad as Deadshot, Jai Courtney will play Boomerang, Margot Robbie will portray Harley Quinn and Cara DeLevigne is the film’s Enchantress. Joel Kinnaman bagged the role of Rick Flag after a scheduling clash forced Tom Hardy to pull out of the film. Ben Affleck is also rumoured to be appearing in the film as Batman after a figure resembling the caped crusader was spotted on the film’s set last month (May).

Meanwhile, How To Get Away With Murder Star star Viola Davis will appear in a supporting role as Amanda Waller, a government agent who is often put in charge of the ‘suicide squad’, a team of super-villains working for the government in return for their freedom. Warner Bros. has set Suicide Squad for release on August 5, 2016.
