Actress fuels rumours by tweeting a link to an article linking her name to two key roles
Katie Cassidy is the latest name to be linked to Fifty Shades Of Grey.
The 25-year-old actress, daughter of 1970s teen idol David Cassidy, is best known for her roles in TV shows Gossip Girl and Melrose Place. At the end of last week (July 27), she fuelled rumours by tweeting a link to an article which tips her for two separate parts in the film: female lead Anastasia Steele and her best friend Kate Kavanagh, a less steamy role.
The screen rights to Fifty Shades Of Grey – which traces the sexual relationship between college graduate Anastasia Steele and businessman Christian Grey – have been acquired by Universal Pictures and Focus Features. The film is being produced by Mike De Luca and Dana Brunetti, who previously worked together on The Social Network.
Casting for the film is a hot topic. Harry Potter star Emma Watson has recently been linked to the role of Steele, depicted in the books as a shy and kind-hearted 22-year-old, as have American teen stars Ashley Benson and Lucy Hale.
Meanwhile, Lost‘s Ian Somerhalder, True Blood‘s Alexander Skarsgård and Superman star Henry Cavill are said to be in contention to play Grey. Earlier this month (July), Channing Tatum admitted he is interested in the male lead – but only if he can star alongside his wife, Jenna Dewan.
Since being published last year, Fifty Shades Of Grey has become notorious for its explicit sexual content and controversial portrayal of a relationship involving BDSM. The three novels by British author EL James have now sold more than 31 million copies worldwide.
