Aaron Johnson is being lined up to star in the new Godzilla movie.
According to Deadline, the Kick-Ass actor is “frontrunner” to play the male lead, but is waiting to read a revised script before he makes his final decision. Johnson has recently finished filming Kick Ass 2, which is due for release this July (2013).
The new Godzilla movie is being helmed by British director Gareth Edwards, who made his name with 2010’s Monsters, an acclaimed sci-fi flick shot for just $500,000 (£308,000).
The original script by Max Borenstein is currently being polished by Frank Darabont, best known for writing and directing The Shawshank Redemption. Shooting is due to begin in March (2013) and Warner Bros has scheduled the movie for a May 2014 opening. Director Edwards recently revealed that he wants to “take a grounded, realistic approach“.
Godzilla began as an Japanese film franchise that ran for 28 pictures between 1954 and 2004. The giant monster has also starred in comic books, novels, TV series and video games. Independence Day director Roland Emmerich helmed a previous Hollywood remake in 1998, but it was poorly received.
