Reese Witherspoon could return as Elle Woods for ‘Legally Blonde 3’

The actor is currently in talks to star in a third installment

Reese Witherspoon is reportedly in talks to return as Elle Woods for ‘Legally Blonde 3’.

The actor starred as the gifted lawyer in both 2001’s Legally Blonde and 2003’s sequel 2: Red, White & Blonde.

As well as reprising her iconic pink-clad character, Witherspoon would also produce the sequel through her media brand Hello Sunshine.

2001’s original writers Kirsten Smith and Karen McCullah are reportedly also in talks to return to the story, along with original producer Marc Platt.

The actor is yet to comment on the reports and it’s unclear whether original cast members – including Luke Wilson and Selma Blair – would return for a third film.

Witherspoon is currently filming the second season of Big Little Lies, along with Nicole Kidman, Zoe Kravitz, Shailene Woodley and Laura Dern.

Meryl Streep has joined the cast for the new episodes, playing the mother of Alexander Skarsgard’s character, Perry Wright.

Appearing on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Witherspoon revealed how Streep’s involvement came about.

“Well, she sent an email to Nicole and I. And it said, ‘Okay, I read the part and I love it and I’m going to do it’,” Witherspoon explained. “And I like dropped the phone, like mic drop, but I phone dropped.”

“And then I called Nicole and I was like, ‘Is this real life? Is this really happening?’ And then I got off the phone with Nicole and I, like, hugged myself gently for a minute and said, ‘This is really happening. You’re really working with Meryl Streep’.”
