Titled 'Love & Mercy', the film will focus on seminal moments from Wilson's life and career
Paul Dano is to play a young Brian Wilson in a biopic about The Beach Boys‘ primary songwriter.
Titled Love & Mercy, the film marks the directorial debut of Bill Pohlad, Oscar-nominated producer of The Tree Of Life and another rock biopic, The Runaways.
Speaking about the film of his life, Brian Wilson said: “I am thrilled that Paul Dano has signed on to play me during one of my most creative explosions and most fulfilling musical times in my career. I still can’t believe how cool it is that my life will be portrayed on the big screen and to have Bill Pohlad as the captain of the Sloop John B is amazing! It just makes me feel so humble. I can’t wait to see it with a full tub of buttered popcorn.”
Dano, 28, is best known for his supporting roles in Little Miss Sunshine, Looper and There Will Be Blood. He also starred in last year’s Ruby Sparks – scroll down and click ‘play’ to watch Dano in the trailer.
Love & Mercy‘s script has been written by Oren Moverman, whose previous credits include Rampart and Dylan biopic I’m Not There. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film will take “an off-the-beaten-path approach” to Wilson’s life story, focusing on seminal moments over several decades. Two actors will play the musician, with an older Wilson yet to be cast.
Atticus Ross, best known for his collaboration with Trent Reznor on the The Social Network‘s score, will handle the soundtrack, which will include Wilson’s own music. Director Pohlad hopes to begin shooting early this summer (2013).
