The mega popstar directed the movie, which tells the story of Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson and received its UK premiere at the London Film Festival last month.

The film centres around Wally, played by Abbie Cornish, and her obsession with the relationship between the British monarch and his lover, Simpson, at the start of the Second World War.

While W.E. marks Madonna‘s first big release, her directorial debut, Filth and Wisdom, was released in 2008 to critical derision.

Madonna insisted that she found the project more challenging than any of her albums, tours or acting roles. She said: “I love writing, directing I also love. The whole process has been extremely inspiring [and] exhausting. I’ve never worked so hard in my life.”

Madonna‘s film career in front of the camera has been somewhat mixed in terms of success. Having won a Golden Globe for Evita in 1997 she has since picked up the less than prestigious honour of being nominated the Worst Actress of the Decade by the Razzies.

W.E., which has received a mixed response from critics, opens in the UK on January 23 next year. You can also see Madonna discussing her work on W.E. in the video below.
