New ‘Shaft’ reboot in the works

The project is in its early stages and has yet to cast its lead actor

Another Shaft reboot is now in the works.

New Line, a subsidiary of Warner Bros, has acquired the rights to the iconic detective franchise and drafted in producer John Davis (I, Robot, The Man From U.N.C.L.E. to help develop a new Shaft film.

According to TheWrap, the project is in its early stages and has yet to cast its lead actor. Richard Roundtree portrayed private detective John Shaft in the original 1971 Shaft film and its two sequels, while Samuel L Jackson starred in an earlier reboot, 2000’s Shaft, playing the character’s nephew, also called John Shaft.

It is currently unknown whether the new Shaft film will be based around John Shaft himself, played by a different actor, or introduce a new character like the 2000 film starring Jackson.

As well as being revered as a classic of the ‘blaxpoitation’ genre, the original Shaft film is famed for its Grammy-winning soundtrack by Isaac Hayes. Hayes’ ‘Theme From Shaft’ became a US Number One hit and won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1971.
