Jodie Foster also stars in the second film from 'District 9' director Neill Blomkamp

A new trailer for Elysium, a sci-fi film starring Matt Damon and Jodie Foster, has been released – you can watch it by scrolling down the page and clicking ‘play’.

The film is set in the year 2159, where a wealthy elite lives on a flawless man-made space station called Elysium, but the rest of the human race is stuck on a ravaged planet Earth, which is now rife with crime and poverty.

In the trailer, it’s revealed that Max (Damon), an ordinary guy from Earth, has just five days to live and must go on a dangerous mission to Elysium, where medical technology would be able to cure him, by breaching its strict anti-immigration laws. Jodie Foster plays Elysium’s mayor, who will stop at nothing to keep him – and anyone else deemed undesirable – out of the artificial paradise.

Elysium is the second film from writer-director Neill Blomkamp, who made his big screen debut with another sci-fi movie, District 9, which was a surprise hit back in 2009. Made for just $30 million (£19.5 million) with a relatively unknown cast, District 9 went on to gross over $210 million (£137 million) at the box office worldwide.

Elysium was made on a much larger budget of $120 million (£78 million). It opens in the US on August 9 but doesn’t arrive in UK cinemas until August 23.
