And director Peter Jackson tells fans to expect further 'special content' this week
A new trailer for The Hobbit will premiere on Wednesday (September 19), director Peter Jackson has revealed.
Jackson made the announcement in a special video message posted on his Facebook page to celebrate the start of Tolkien Week. The novel The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien was first published on September 21, 1937 – 75 years ago this Friday – while the novel’s fictional heroes Bilbo and Frodo Baggins are both said to be born on September 22.
After predicting “a very interesting week” for Tolkienites, Jackson announced: “Our contribution to the celebrations is to debut our new trailer for The Hobbit on the 19th. We’re also going to share some special content with you, the fans, so check back with us in a day or two.” Scroll down to watch his full video message.
In July, Jackson used his Facebook page to confirm that The Hobbit will be a trilogy of films rather than the previously announced two.
The first film is subtitled An Unexpected Journey and opens in cinemas on December 14 this year (2012). The second, The Desolation Of Smaug, will follow on December 13 2013, before the trilogy concludes with There And Back Again on July 18 2014.
The films star Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins and promise an ensemble cast including Ian McKellen, Elijah Wood, Andy Serkis, Cate Blanchett, Bret McKenzie, Orlando Bloom and Benedict Cumberbatch.
