Oprah Winfrey’s fans have called for the US talk show host and actress to consider a presidential run in 2020 after she delivered a searing speech at the Golden Globes last night.
As she picked up the Cecil B. DeMille lifetime achievement award, the 63-year-old entertainment icon delivered an impassioned speech that touched on the struggle for civil rights in America and the sexual harassment scandal that has rocked Hollywood in recent months.
Discussing the latter topic, Winfrey told the crowd: “I want all the girls watching here, now, to know that a new day is on the horizon.
“And when that new day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women, many of whom are right here in this room tonight, and some pretty phenomenal men, fighting hard to make sure that they become the leaders who take us to the time when nobody ever has to say ‘Me too’ again.”
The emotional address was met with huge applause at the Beverly Hilton ceremony, and even prompted widespread calls for Winfrey to consider running against Donald Trump in 2020.
America’s National Organisation for Women wrote on Twitter: “”For too long, women have not been heard or believed if they dared to speak their truth to power men hold. But their time is up!” Oprah is the hero we need. #GoldenGlobes #Oprah2020.”
TV anchor David Shuster said: ““A new day is on the horizon…”. @Oprah speech at #GoldenGlobes2018 was a tour de force. It underscores why so many political pros believe Oprah, if she ran, would easily become America’s first woman President. And it wouldn’t matter who the opponent is… #Oprah2020.”

The speculation over a presidential run was also heightened by Oprah’s longtime partner Stedman Graham, who refused to rule out the prospect when approached by the Los Angeles Times at the ceremony.
“It’s up to the people”, he admitted.
“She would absolutely do it.”
