Jay-Z is serving as a producer on the new 'Annie' movie, which will hit cinemas over Christmas 2014

Oscar-nominated child actress Quvenzhané Wallis has been cast as the lead in Jay-Z‘s Annie remake.

Nine-year-old Wallis was nominated for the best actress award at this year’s Oscars for her performance in Beasts Of The Southern Wild, but lost out to Jennifer Lawrence, who took home the trophy for her turn in Silver Linings Playbook. Wallis replaces Willow Smith as the star of the new Annie movie, after the ‘Whip My Hair’ singer, now 12, was deemed to have outgrown the role.

Jay-Z is a producer on the project alongside Willow’s parents Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith. The rapper, who sampled a song from the classic Broadway musical for his 1998 hit ‘Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem)’, is also rumoured to be writing new songs for the movie.

Will Gluck (Easy A, Friends With Benefits) is set to direct and is currently revising a script that has already had input from Emma Thompson and The Devil Wears Prada screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna. The film has been slated for a Christmas 2014 release.
