Oscars favourite Chiwetel Ejiofor rumoured for ‘Star Wars’ role

'12 Years A Slave' star has been spotted in the lobby of JJ Abrams' offices

Oscar-tipped British actor Chiwetel Ejiofor is the latest name being linked to JJ Abrams‘ forthcoming Star Wars movie.

Ejiofor was spotted “sitting in the lobby” of Abrams’ offices by a The Times journalist sent to interview the director recently. In the interview published on Saturday (November 2), the journalist asks Abrams if this means Ejiofor is up for a part in Star Wars and the director replies coyly: “I can’t discuss casting. But he’s a very talented gentleman.”

According to the latest odds from William Hill, Ejiofor is currently 13/8 favourite to take home the Best Actor prize at next year’s Oscars for his performance in 12 Years A Slave. The historical drama co-starring Michael Fassbender and Brad Pitt opens in UK cinemas on January 28 – watch the trailer below.

Meanwhile, it wasannounced late last month (October) that two new screenwriters are now working on the script for Star Wars: Episode VII. Abrams is due to start shooting next spring (2014) at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire and a 2015 release date is being targeted. At present, plot details are unknown and no cast members have been confirmed.

Harrison Ford and fellow original stars Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill are all expected to be returning, though Ford claimed he has “not quite made the choice” during a TV interview last month (October). Atonement‘s Saoirse Ronan and The Wire actor Michael B Jordan have both revealed they have auditioned for roles and Benedict Cumberbatch, who worked with Abrams on this year’s Star Trek Into Darkness, has been linked to the film too.
