Russell Crowe to play Superman’s dad?

Oscar-winning actor in line for role of Jor-El

Russell Crowe is in talks to take the role of Superman‘s biological father, Jor-El, in the latest adaptation of the Superman story, Man Of Steel.

Crowe, star of Gladiator, LA Confidential and Robin Hood, looks set to play the character made famous by Marlon Brando in Richard Donner‘s 1978 original.

Meanwhile, Latino Review reports that Connie Nielsen, who starred opposite Crowe in Gladiator, has been offered the chance to play Kal-El‘s Kryptonian mother.

Kevin Costner and Diane Lane are already signed up to play Clark Kent‘s adoptive parents, Jonathan and Martha Kent.

If Man Of Steel keeps with the Superman tradition the roles of the hero’s natural mother and father will be relatively small, equating to little more than an extended cameo.

Man Of Steel, to be directed by 300 and Sucker Punch visionary Zach Snyder, would mark Russell Crowe‘s first foray into comic book territory.

British actor Henry Cavill won the part of Clark Kent/Superman earlier this year after impressing in the BBC production of The Tudors. His big-screen credits include Stardust, Tristan And Isolde and the Woody Allen movie, Whatever Works. He will be seen later this year in The Immortals.

Man Of Steel is set for UK release around Christmas 2012.
