Ryan Gosling pays tribute to late meme creator by finally eating his cereal

Ryan McHenry, creator of 'Ryan Gosling Won't Eat His Cereal', passed away on Sunday (May 3)

Ryan Gosling has paid tribute to Ryan McHenry, the Scottish filmmaker who created the popular “Ryan Gosling Won’t Eat His Cereal” meme.

McHenry, who hailed from Dumfries in Scotland, died over the weekend following a two-year battle with bone cancer. He was 27 years old. In his honour, Gosling shared a Vine yesterday (May 4) in which he is seen finally eating his cereal.

“My heart goes out to all of Ryan McHenry’s family and friends,” Gosling wrote on Twitter. “Feel very lucky to have been a part of his life in some small way.”

McHenry’s amusing video clips spliced footage of Gosling’s trademark brooding acting technique with shots of a slowly approaching spoonful of cereal, which the actor would then appear to refuse to eat. They became popular online in 2013 and a compilation of some of McHenry’s early clips has now been viewed over two million times on YouTube.

McHenry was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer, in 2013, the same year as he began posting the “Ryan Gosling Won’t Eat His Cereal” video clips. Although he announced in July 2014 that he had beaten the disease, it later returned and he lost his cancer battle on Sunday (May 3).
