‘Star Trek 2’ to start shooting in January

JJ Abrams' space sequel is getting closer

Star Trek 2 is set to begin filming in the new year.

Ever since the success of JJ Abrams‘ reboot of the classic spacefaring saga, a sequel has been in development. Now, Trek Movie the film will enter production on January 15, 2012, four years and two months after the original started.

The site also reports that Abrams, who will once again direct and produce, has travelled to Hawaii to scout a location that is being considered for a “jungle planet”, while a museum in Los Angeles will stand in for a “famous Star Trek location” with studio shooting taking place inside the Paramount lot.

The script was completed some time ago by writers Robert Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof. Benicio Del Toro has apparently been offered the role of the villain, and the principal cast are all expected to return, including Chris Pine and Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock and Zoe Saldana as Uhuru.

Star Trek 2 is now expected to be released in late 2012 or summer 2013.
