Co-star John Boyega also tips Ridley for the role
Daisy Ridley has confirmed that she is in discussions about appearing in the next Tomb Raider film.
Ridley, who appeared as Rey in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and will star in future instalments of that franchise, is believed to be one of a number of actresses who could play Lara Croft in a new adaptation of the computer game character turned film.
Following the speculation, The Hollywood Reporter spoke to Ridley at last night’s Empire Awards, who confirmed her interest in the role. “Absolutely, I’m trying to fill up my calendar,” Ridley said when asked whether she would be available for the part.
Ridley continued to state that there “have been conversations” about Ridley portraying Croft and that she is “I’m waiting for someone to say ‘I want you, let’s do it'”.
The Hollywood Reporter also spoke to Ridley’s Star Warsco-star John Boyega about the possibility of her taking the role. “I played Tomb Raider, the game… I texted Daisy [and] was like, ‘this is you!’ and ‘you need to get on that because you could be Lara Croft.’ She should be.”
It is believed that producers are keen to replicate the recent story of the Tomb Raider games and explore Lara Croft’s origin story. The 2013 Tomb Raider game saw gamers play through Croft’s first adventure as an archeology student, with Rise of The Tomb Raider continuing that story in 2015.
Angelina Jolie famously played Croft in two films, including 2003 sequel Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life.
Ridley made headlines recently after she hit out at online criticism she has received over her looks and defended herself against accusations that her slender figure represents “unrealistic expectations” for young girls.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens was released last December and represented Ridley’s first major screen role. Production is currently underway for follow-up Episode VIII, which will be written and directed by Rian Johnson. That film is expected for release in 2017.
