‘Star Wars’ Chewbacca actor Peter Mayhew hospitalised with pneumonia

Actor's wife says 'he will make a full recovery' and should be discharged within a few days

Actor Peter Mayhew, who plays Chewbacca in the Star Wars franchise, is recovering in hospital following a bout of pneumonia.

The 70-year-old’s wife, Angie Mayhew, gave an update on her husband’s status in a Reddit post yesterday (January 19). “Peter is indeed in the hospital with pneumonia,” she wrote. “He will make a full recovery, and hope(s) to be discharged within a few days. Doctors are incredibly happy with his improvements.”

“Thank you for all the well wishes, prayers, good vibes, and happy thoughts,” Angie Mayhew added.

British-born Mayhew, who now lives in Texas, was cast as Chewbacca in George Lucas’s original 1977 Star Wars film owing to his considerable height: at his peak, he stood at 7ft 3in tall. Mayhew reprised his popular role for 1980’s The Empire Strikes Back, 1983’s Return of the Jedi and 2005’s Revenge of The Sith.

He is also returning as Chewbacca in JJ Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which is set for release on December 18 this year.
