‘Star Wars’ fans angry at lack of extras on ‘The Force Awakens’ UK DVD

The DVD edition was released earlier this week

Many Star Wars fans have been left unhappy after the UK DVD release of the film featured none of the extras and bonus features of the Blu-Ray edition.

JJ Abrams’ blockbuster hit cinemas last December and was released on DVD and Blu-Ray in the UK earlier this week (April 18).

Despite publicising deleted scenes and bonus content, such as a clip of Daisy Ridley and John Boyega rapping, the UK DVD version didn’t feature any extras or a download link to watch the movie online.

Some fans have described the release as a “rip-off” after US DVD copies featured such bonus features. See a collection of tweets from fans below.

In response, Disney UK told The Guardian that they haven’t included digital download links with physical releases for more than five years and that it was common for extra features to only be included on Blu-ray and digital-only releases.

“As a company we are committed to seeking out the best ways to provide audiences with access to Disney content,” a spokesperson said. “Each territory is different, and we evaluate and enact distribution strategies on a market-by-market basis. In the UK this means we do not include extras across our DVD products.”

“Our Blu-ray and digital-download offerings for The Force Awakens are providing audiences with a wealth of extras including a special documentary, behind-the-scenes looks and much more that are now being enjoyed by thousands.”

Since its release last year, JJ Abrams’ film has raked in over $2.06 billion (£1.46 billion) at the global box office, making it the third highest-grossing film of all time behind James Cameron’s Avatar and Titanic.
