Daisy Ridley aced a three-day ‘Star Wars’ lightsaber training session in 90 minutes

New featurette shows Rey actress honing her skills

A new Star Wars: The Last Jedi featurette shows Daisy Ridley honing her lightsaber skills. Scroll below to watch.

The video sees the Rey star training for a scene that takes place on the same mountain we last saw her at the end of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

In the clip, the film’s assistant flight coordinator Liang Yang talks about how well Ridley took to her training.

“I was planning to teach her the whole routine in three days but she surprisingly learned everything in an hour and a half,” he said. “She’s a very quick learner.”

In the video, director Rian Johnson describes the scene that Rey’s practising for. “Daisy is training for a moment where she is on the island,” he said.

“She has a moment to herself and she’s practising with a staff and then she realises: Why am I wasting my time practising with a staff? I have Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber in my satchel.”

The featurette also has Gwendoline Christie describing her work as Phasma as “the hardest physical thing I’ve done yet” and John Boyega talking up the fight scene between Finn and Phasma.

Kelly Marie Tran, who joins the franchise as Rose Tico, also talks about learning the different fight styles, while Adam Driver describes the process as “rigorous”.

As well as Ridley, Boyega and Driver, also returning to the film are Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker and, in her last Star Wars role, the late Carrie Fisher as General Leia.

Rounding out the main cast are Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, Kelly Marie Tran, Laura Dern and Benicio Del Toro.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is released on December 14.
