Suicide Squad director addresses Joker-Robin connection

The Joker's backstory involves Batman "smashing his teeth"

Suicide Squad director David Ayer has revealed the Joker-Robin connection, after deleted scenes cut-down the Joker’s backstory in the film.

Ayer recently denied a popular fan theory about the movie suggesting a historical link between Jared Leto’s Joker and Ben Affleck’s Batman.

However, speaking in an interview with Empire magazine, Ayer commented: “This is sort of my personal thing and maybe less about a larger connection but Joker killed Robin and Batman basically smashes his teeth out and locks him up in Arkham Asylum.”

He continued, “It’s in the asylum where Joker would have done the ‘damaged’ tattoo as a message to Batman saying, ‘You’ve damaged me. I was so beautiful before and now you’ve destroyed my face.’ That’s where the grill comes from.”

Some fans are speculating that Leto’s baddie could actually be Jason Todd, who in the DC comic books universe is the second of Batman’s Robins. However, when asked about this “Robin gone bad” theory by WSVN-TV’, Ayer replied: “It ain’t the case!”

Suicide Squad – released on August 5 – features a rogue’s gallery of some iconic DC villains played by major Hollywood actors, including Will Smith as Deadshot, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn.
