Titled Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes, the sequel is set 15 years after the events of 2011’s Rise Of The Planet Apes, in a world where intelligent apes rule and most of human race has been wiped out. Gary Oldman recently signed on to appear as the leader of a human colony, but Russell’s role is currently unknown.
Zero Dark Thirty‘s Jason Clarke also has an unknown role in the sequel, which has a release date of May 23, 2014.
Meanwhile, Andy Serkis will be back as rebellious chimp Caesar, but the star of the 2011 movie, James Franco, has admitted he is unlikely to return even for a cameo appearance.
Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes is being helmed by Cloverfeld director Matt Reeves after Rupert Wyatt, who called the shots on the 2011 movie, dropped out last September. Reeves and Russell previously worked together on Felicity, the US TV series set in a New York university that Russell starred in from 1998 to 2002. Reeves co-created the show with JJ Abrams.
