‘The Avengers’ voted most overrated movie of 2012

Over 85% of voters choose Joss Whedon's superhero ensemble movie in an LA Times poll

The Avengers has been voted the most overrated movie of 2012 in an online poll.

The LA Times shortlisted seven films for the unflattering title, including lewd comedy Ted and Ridley Scott’s sci-fi flick Prometheus.

However, a whopping 85% of voters plumped for the The Avengers, Joss Whedon‘s ensemble piece featuring a bevy of Marvel superheroes. Prometheus finished a distant second with just under 5% of votes, followed by Pixar’s Brave with a shade over 1%.

Released last May, The Avengers took over $1.51 billion (£930 million) at the worldwide box office, becoming the highest-grossing film of 2012 by some margin. Two other movies broke the $1 billion barrier: The Dark Knight Rises with $1.08 billion (£660 million) and Skyfall with $1.02 billion (£630 million).

Whedon is now working on a sequel to The Avengers, set for release on May 1, 2015. In the meantime, Marvel favourites Iron Man, Thor and Captain America will all star in their own standalone movies.
