The 35-second teaser premiered on US TV show Jimmy Kimmel Live last night (July 10) during a promotional appearance by Gary Oldman. The clip features a tense exchange between Oldman’s character, Gotham City Police Commissioner James Gordon, and an inquisitive young police officer called Blake.

Blake, played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, is seen questioning Gordon about the death of Senator Harvey Dent and the subsequent disappearance of the mysterious ‘Batman’ figure – events that took place at the end of 2008’s The Dark Knight. The new film is set eight years after its predecessor.

The Dark Knight Rises, the final instalment in director Christopher Nolan‘s Batman trilogy, opens in the US and the UK on July 20. Christian Bale reprises his role as Bruce Wayne, while Tom Hardy co-stars as the villainous Bane and Anne Hathaway appears as Selina Kyle aka Catwoman.

Reviews of the movie are currently under embargo, but early reactions have been positive. Earlier this week it was reported that The Dark Knight Rises won a standing ovation at a preview screening in the US. After watching the film, one anonymous blogger admitted shedding tears of “pure geeky uncontrollable happiness”.
