The horror film’s synopsis teases: “When aspiring model Jesse moves to Los Angeles, her youth and vitality are devoured by a group of beauty-obsessed women who will take any means necessary to get what she has.”

Elle Fanning stars as Jesse, flanked by a cast that includes Keanu Reeves, Abbey Lee, Christina Hendricks, Jena Malone, Bella Heathcote and Alessandro Nivola. The film’s score is composed by former Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Cliff Martinez, who also collaborated with Winding Refn on Drive and Only God Forgives.

Winding Refn has said of the film’s origins: “One morning I woke and realised I was both surrounded and dominated by women. Strangely, a sudden urge was planted in me to make a horror film about vicious beauty.

“After making Drive and falling madly in love with the electricity of Los Angeles, I knew I had to return to tell the story of The Neon Demon. This movie is a manifestation of the strong ties between us and will lead to many more adventures.”

The Neon Demon will compete at the Cannes Film Festival next month (May) before hitting cinema screens later in the summer.
