McQuarrie recently wrote and directed Jack Reacher, an action thriller starring Cruise that came out last December (2012). He’ll direct M:I5 from a script by Iron Man 3 scribe Drew Pearce, and shooting is expected to take place next year for a 2015 release.
Cruise first appeared as elite secret agent Ethan Hunt in 1996’s Mission: Impossible and has reprised the role in three sequels. The most recent instalment, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, came out in 2011 and grossed nearly $700 million (£450 million) at the box office worldwide – the highest total of Cruise’s career.
