Comedian offers to pay fine for DJ James Meyers
Tom Green has offered to pay the fine for a man who was arrested this week after failing to return a copy of Green’s film Freddy Got Fingered that he borrowed 14 years ago.
James Meyers of North Carolina was arrested this week after police found an outstanding warrant for his arrest relating to a VHS rental of the comedy dating back to 2002. The warrant was brought to police attention when the man was pulled over with a broken light on his car.
“The officer said, ‘I don’t know how to tell you this but there’s a warrant out for your arrest from 2002. Apparently you rented the movie Freddy Got Fingered and never returned it.’ I thought he was joking,” Meyers told WSOC TV.
Meyers, who was driving his daughter to school at the time, then visited a local police station where he was charged with failure to return rental property. He faces a fine of up to $200 (£140).
However, Tom Green has offered to step in and pay the fine. Green wrote, directed and starred in Freddie Got Fingered in 2001. The film is widely considered one of the worst comedies of all time and has a score of just 11% on review-aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.
Green tweeted about the arrest and later told the New York Daily News that he had spoken to Meyers and will help him with his expenses.
“If it’s 200 bucks of course I’ll pay it for him, just for the principle of the thing,” Green said.
Meyers works as a DJ and does not currently own a VHS player. He has watched the film back since his arrest and later questioned the use of police resources.
