The original writers are still working on a sequel, but Jolie's Fox character will stay dead
A second Wanted film is still in the works, but the sequel will not feature Angelina Jolie.
Written by Derek Haas and Michael Brandt, the 2008 action movie starred James McAvoy as Wesley Gibson, a frustrated office worker who gets recruited to a guild of professional assassins by an enigmatic character known as Fox, played by Jolie.
The film, helmed by Russian director Timur Bekmambetov, was a big hit at the box office, grossing over $341 million (£213 million) worldwide. A sequel has been in the works for several years, but Haas and Brandt’s original script for Wanted 2 was rejected by Universal Pictures and Bekmambetov, and new writers were parachuted in.
However, the original screenwriting duo are now back on board and about to submit a second script. Derek Haas told Hollywood.com: “We got that call that you always love as a screenwriter. ‘Can you guys please come back?’ We loved the world. That experience was great. We said, ‘Well, here’s what we want to do with the sequel.’ And they said, ‘OK.'”
However, Haas insisted that Wanted 2 will not resurrect Jolie’s character, who appears to die at the end of the original film. He explained: “Angelina Jolie gets shot in the head and everyone’s like, ‘Oh, are you going to bring back Fox?’ I said, ‘Did you see the bullet go into her head?’ And they say, ‘Oh, she can take one of those milk baths!’ We never wanted to do that movie.”
Discussing the premise of Wanted 2, Haas teased: “The only thing I can tell you is that [McAvoy’s character] Wesley is now, four years later, recruiting a young woman who is in his situation in the first movie. She’s got a shitty life. He’s sort of in the Fox role. This new girl is brought into the world.”
