Warner Bros. announces ‘The Lego Movie Sequel’ release date

Releases dates for spin-off films 'The Lego Batman Movie' and 'Ninjago' are also confirmed

Warner Bros. has announced release dates for The Lego Movie Sequel and its pair of Lego Movie spin-off films.

The Lego Movie Sequel – whose title was confirmed in February – will open in cinemas on May 8, 2018. It will follow The Lego Batman Movie, which will be released on February 10, 2017, and Ninjago, a Ninja-themed spin-off which will arrive on September 22, 2017.

“These three films already in the pipeline are just the beginning of a creative and diverse animation slate that will be delighting audiences for years to come,” said Warner Bros.’ executive Dan Fellman in a press release.

In February Warner Bros. also confirmed that Rob Schrab has been hired to directThe Lego Movie Sequel. Schrab, best known for his TV work directing episodes of US sitcoms Community and The Mindy Project, takes over the director’s chair from Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the duo who co-directed last year’s The Lego Movie.

Lord and Miller will serve as producers on the sequel and are also co-writing its script. Meanwhile, Robot Chicken‘s Chris McKay has been hired to direct The Lego Batman Movie with Will Arnett reprising his voice role from The Lego Movie.

Released last year (2014), The Lego Movie was a surprise smash for Warner Bros, raking in over $468 million (£301 million) at the box office worldwide. Tegan and Sara performed their hit song from the film, ‘Everything Is Awesome!!!’, at the Academy Awards in February.
